Okay, so when you see something like self care exercise, you probably think that you are going to be jumping up and down, burning some calories, and breaking a sweat, right?  

Well, that’s not the case exactly.

It’s not the case at all really.  When I speak about self care exercise, I don’t mean physical movement exactly. 

I mean self care activities that can help make your life easier so that your mind, body, and spirit are aligned. 

This way you have less stress and more success!

Sounds good right?

Now before I give you all the goods, we have to start with the basics. The basics being, what is self care exercise.

Don’t worry I am not going to give you this long complicated response that you have to ponder upon, because that’s not my style. 

I like things short, sweet, and complete. 

Well, my definitions that is! 

Anything else, you know what never mind. Let’s get back to the definition of self care exercise.

Self care exercise is an activity that when implemented correctly, will help you move forward in life.

It’ll help you:

  • Reduce stress
  • Deal with challenging emotional situations
  • Take care of you mentally, physically, and spiritually
  • Increase your ability to relax.

The best part about self care exercise is that they are not super complicated at all.

Why Is Self Care Exercise Important?

Okay, so I wouldn’t write this post if I didn’t know self care exercise was important.

I mean, I do have kids, a business, a spouse, I’m homeschooling too, so time is limited.

The media portrays self care as this hidden gem that makes you feel better when you feel down. 

They media makes you believe that when you spend money on lavish things, go shopping, have a spa day, you will instantly feel better and have nothing to worry about at all. That is not the case at all.

I won’t even go in on how those activities are usually distractions/self-soothing techniques, and not self care activities that help you move forward in life. 

But what I will tell you is that self care should not be practiced only when life gets tough but just like physical exercise, it is something that should be done consistently. 

Doing a self care exercise daily will help you maintain a healthy relationship with yourself, helps to produce positive feelings, boost your confidence, and increases your self-esteem. 

Self care is all about helping you take care of your health, preventing new diseases, limiting your illnesses, and taking care of yourself mentally spiritually, physically, so that you can have bliss.

Mindfulness

So when you hear the word mindfulness what do you think of? 

I immediately think of some long-haired woman walking barefoot on the beach with no care in the world. 

I don’t know why I think that, especially because it has nothing to do with practicing mindfulness at all. 

Simply put, mindfulness is the state of being aware of you can say being fully present. 

Too many times, we are living life just going through the motions instead of actually living. 

We are always thinking about the next big thing instead of creating memories. 

When you slow down and allow yourself to take in what’s around you, using all five of your senses, you worry less and increase your overall well-being.

Set Realistic Expectations

I know you have days where you thought, “Why is time flying?”. 

Like you see it’s the end of the day and it feels like you have nothing done because your to-do list is still a mile long! 

Well, sis, this is when I am going to be real with you. 

I want you to be realistic because I know you did not sit on your butt all day and do nothing. You did a lot of things! 

But because you have such high hopes of achieving EVERYTHING every day, you feel like you haven’t gotten anything done, when you really did! 

It’s time for you to set realistic expectations of what you can get done daily and stop stretching yourself to your limit.

Setting Boundaries

Whew! I know every time that ONE family member opens their mouth, it is always something negative. 

You wish they would just hush and mind their own business. 

Surprise! This can actually happen! 

No, you can’t go punch her in the mouth, especially if she’s the type that likes to call the cops. 

We got too much to lose now sis, so don’t do it! 

But what you can do, that won’t involve any court fees, or money at all, is set boundaries. 

Open your mouth and let her know how it makes you feel when she speaks to you or about you that way. 

Separate yourself from her and don’t allow her in your space. 

Setting boundaries allows you to make sure your needs are met, which is an important part of self care.

Meditation

Now, before you roll your eyes or skip this self care exercise, let me just open your mind a bit about meditation

Meditation is definitely a hidden gem! 

If you’re like me and your mind is always going 100 miles a minute, which makes it hard to complete anything in life, then meditation is for you.

Meditation helps with managing stress, focusing on the present, reducing negative emotions, and increasing patience. Which you need girl especially with these kids!

Work Life Balance

When I say work life balance, don’t think that I mean that you need to spend equal time with your family and at your job, because that’s not it at all. That definition is outdated. 

The work life balance definition that I like is that work life balance is a feeling of achievement and enjoyment in your personal life as well as in your work life. 

It is not about spending equal amounts of time at all. 

It’s about how you feel. 

When you have a feeling of achievement and enjoyment in all areas of your life, you, my friend, have achieved work life balance

This is why striving for these feelings are the ultimate self care exercise.

Setting Goals

When you give up learning and achieving in life, then you pretty much lose motivation and remain stagnant. 

To avoid this happening, a great self care exercise is setting goals

Setting goals helps to give you long-term vision and short-term motivation. 

Goals help you to focus on what you want, organizes your time, and focus in a way that allows you to make the most of your resources.

This way you can make the most of your life. 

Physical Fitness

Now, I know when I mentioned self care exercise, I said that it didn’t mean physical exercise, but here I am mentioning it. 

Hear me out because an amazing self care activity, is of course physical fitness, so I couldn’t leave this out. 

Thirty minutes of physical fitness each day has so many tremendous benefits!

Thirty minutes of exercise leads to you having a better mood, improved health, lose weight, and the ability to live a fulfilling life.

Healthy Eating

As I say this, my heart hurts. As much as I enjoy fried foods and sweets, I know that they aren’t doing me any favors at all. 

Eating more fruits and vegetables and less processed food does the body good. 

Healthy eating is an amazing self care exercise that can help:

  • Reduce chronic diseases
  • Increase your energy
  • Uplift your moods
  • Improve your memory and brain health
  • Help you lose weight
  • Give you strong bones and teeth.

Sleep Routine

With today’s culture of #TeamNoSleep and I’ll sleep when I’m dead, you would think that sleep is not essential. But it is! 

Sleep is very, very, very, very, did I say very, important! 

Sleep helps to keep you healthy. 

Every night when you lay on your comfy bed and close your eyes, you are giving your body and brain a chance to restore and re-energize itself. 

When you don’t get enough sleep,

  • You lower your sex drive
  • Weaken your immune system
  • Gain weight
  • Increase your risk of getting certain diseases
  • You also have problems remembering things.

Positive Thinking

Okay, so you know when you do something that you knew you shouldn’t have, but you did it anyway? 

When it goes bad, which it always does, you start calling yourself names. This makes you feel worse. 

Why do you do that? 

Why not talk to yourself like you would a friend who made the same mistake you did. 

When you practice positive thinking, which is simply having an optimistic attitude, you focus on the good in any given situation. 

Practicing positive thinking has a huge impact on your physical and mental health.
