You’re trying to do the right thing by practicing self care and it’s not working!
You are still stressed out to the max and you pretty much feel like you are wasting your time, money, and energy on something that may not be for you.
If that’s the case, then you are committing some self care mistakes, that are making self care hard when it shouldn’t be at all. This means you need to take a self care assessment ASAP!
Taking a self care assessment lets you know where you are, what you need, and what works best for you so you can create an effective self care routine that fits your lifestyle.
What Is A Self Care Assessment?
Okay because I’m not one to beat around the bush, I like things given to me straight, I will tell you exactly what a self care assessment is.
A self care assessment is a form that you fill out to help you identify how often and how effectively you are using self care activities to help you meet your needs.
Which makes sense, because everyone is different, (their lifestyles, beliefs, and goals), everyone’s self care needs are different.
This may be why self care isn’t working for you!
You’re trying activities that work for your best friend, mom, sister, favorite celebrity, instead of what you need.
Why Should You Take A Self Care Assessment?
Piggybacking off of what I previously said, about how everyone’s self care needs are different, taking a self care assessment allows you to create an accurate self care routine that works just for you.
For example, I am a mom of three, four, if you count my husband, and a small business owner.
I do not have the time or money to spend on lavish self care activities like a new wardrobe, taking one of those beautiful baths filled with flowers and milk, or even going to get my feet and nails done all the time.
So how is that I take care of my needs?
Well, by taking the self care assessment I can identify what self care category I am lacking in when it comes to practicing self care.
Oh, you didn’t know there were different categories to self care?
Hmm…let me explain.
What Are The Four Categories of Self Care?
When you search for, what are the categories of self care on Google, you will typically see four. These four categories are emotional, physical, psychological, and spiritual.
But because I like to make things as simple as possible, I break things down into smaller, digestible, bites, so you truly understand how to practice self care.
With that being said, instead of the typical four categories that everyone else focuses on, I concentrate on 9.
Those 9 categories are:
-Emotional Self Care
-Psychological Self Care
-Physical Self Care
-Spiritual Self Care
-Professional Self Care
-Financial Self Care
-Environmental Self Care
-Social Self Care
-Personal Self Care
From this list, you can see, these self care categories cover every facet of your life so that you can achieve work life balance.
These days we have so much on our plate that it is so easy to burn out. Which leads me to my next point, why is self care so important.
Why is Self Care So Important?
Self care is important, because it prevents burnout.
In today’s society, we are expected to do it all.
As a mom, you are expected to:
- Keep the house clean
- Take care of the kids
- Excel in your career
- Make your spouse happy
- Make your kids happy
- Make sure your friends are happy
Pretty much go out of your way to make sure everyone and everything is taken care of before you take care of you and your needs.
Which is complete and utter bull!
Burning the candle at both ends, at work, and at home, comes with enormous consequences. This can lead to burnout, depression, anxiety, resentment, impact your health negatively and so much more.
Practicing self care the right way, can boost your physical health, emotional health, and help you to be happier.
Plus, taking care of yourself means that you will have more energy and less resentment, which makes you a much better mom, wife, coworker, boss, and friend.
Since the benefits of self care are amazing you are probably wondering, how in the heck do I practice self care?
Well, don’t you worry your pretty little self because of course, I got you covered.
How To Practice Self Care Using A Self Care Assessment
Ok, so the whole point of taking a self care assessment is to make sure you are practicing self care in a way that benefits you.
This is why taking a self care assessment is super important!
When you take a self care assessment, you will see each self care category listed along with activities and questions that pertain to it. You must answer the questions honestly.
Just an FYI there is no right or wrong answer at all on the assessment .
In fact, if you do not answer the question truthfully you are hurting yourself. Doing so means your self care assessment won’t accurately report what category of self care you need to focus most on.
Also, remember a self care assessment is not comprehensive.
It serves as a starting point for thinking about your self care needs and which categories, of self care you may want to focus on first. This way you can attain work life balance.
