Girl, you won’t believe what happened today?

I almost lost it all! 

My marbles, my cool, whatever you want to call it. I realized I really need to develop a self care plan immediately.

Let me tell you all about it.

I came home from a hard day at work, thinking I can sit down and relax in my home. I even ordered takeout because 1. I was planning ahead. 2. Your sis was not cooking today. 

I really wanted to destress and unwind with my family.

But, girl, I walked through the door and saw everyone and everything out of place! 

I mean you would’ve thought I was moving or decluttering the way the house looked! To top it off, everyone was sitting around like nothing needed to be done. 

I literally dropped my stuff off and left back out. I turned off my phone and didn’t return until bedtime.

I just needed to get away before I did something I regretted. 

I realized I need to start doing something for myself. 

I am tired of always feeling like I am someone’s maid. It’s time to start developing a self care plan that works for me.

What Is Self Care

Okay so the first, first, first, first, step into developing a self care plan that works for your busy life is knowing exactly what self care is.

I’m finding out more and more with my interactions with people that they are confused about what self care truly is. 

They seem to believe that self care is all about shopping, facials, and making sure hair doesn’t grow where the sun don’t shine.

Let’s be honest, I’m not that comfortable in my body to just let hair grow freely, but doing those things are not self care. Even though that’s what the media wants you to believe.

Self care is doing something that deliberately helps you move forward in life. 

It helps you to figure out your triggers, develop good habits, and lower your stress, so you can live a happier life.

It does not distract you.

Self care helps you do the work that needs to be done so that you can find who you are, what you need, and what you want.

This leads me to why is self care is so important.

Why Self Care Is Important

So you definitely heard the word self care being mentioned a lot. 

I’m sure you saw it on tv, in print, and probably heard your friends and family mention it, but, why? 

Why is self care so popular these days?

I’m going to tell you why. 

I may be a little biased because self care is everything in my book. 

But… I am sure after I tell you why it is so important, you will think the same too!

Self care is so important because it helps you in every aspect of your life! 

It helps you emotionally, professionally, spiritually, environmentally, financially, mentally, and in so many more areas. 

We live in a hustle society where we are supposed to work long hours, not take any breaks, so we can buy more stuff and take on more debt. 

This leads us to not taking care of ourselves. 

We tend to burn out, become depressed, anxious, angry, or resent our lives. 

When what we should be doing is enjoying the lives we worked so hard to create every single day. 

We should be doing things that take care of our overall health because health is wealth, and that is exactly what self care does. 

Self care has been clinically proven to:

  • Reduce and eliminate stress
  • Improve concentration
  • Increase happiness
  • Improve energy
  • Reduce heart disease, stroke and cancer
  • It helps to keep you in tune with yourself and your purpose.

Knowing all of that, there is no way that you don’t want the benefits of self care. I know you can see why it is so important. 

But, before you go out and get started developing a self care plan that fits your life, there are three mistakes that I don’t want you to make.

These three mistakes are ones that I see most people making, so keep reading.

3 Mistakes People Make When Developing A Self Care Plan

Because I want the best for you and I know the benefits that self care can provide for you, I don’t want you to make these three mistakes. 

I want you to thrive instead of survive. 

This means I have to do everything in my power to give you the tools that you need.

With that being said, let’s get started in learning about the three mistakes you will NOT make because you know about them.

Self Care vs Self Soothing

Oh, Lawd! This is the biggest, biggest, biggest, mistake I see people doing. 

Okay, when you look up self care on social media, you see beautiful women trying on new outfits, waxing, and getting facials. 

Now, before you beat me up about it, I’m not saying these things are wrong at all because I love to get dolled up too, but these activities are not self care.  

Self care is not something that is elaborate or costs a lot of money. 

Self care helps you get to know yourself on the inside. 

It involves changing habits and doing the uncomfortable work so that you can receive the long term benefits. 

Whereas self-soothing is helpful, don’t get me wrong, but it is something that you do to help you move past an emotion at the moment. It doesn’t truly help you divulge in it and figure out the trigger.

Self Care Is Different For Everyone

So because your sister or your sfriend is practicing self care and it is working for her, she gave you some activities to try.

This is great and I am happy that you have friends and family who are willing to support you but, I don’t want you to get your hopes up.

I want you to know because it’s my job to be completely honest with you, that just because her self care routine and activities work for her, does not mean that it will work for you.

You are two different people with two different lifestyles, beliefs, goals, visions, and families, which means your priorities are different.

What I am saying is, that if you adopt her self care plan instead of developing a self care plan that works specifically for you, it is going to make self care a lot more difficult for you. 

Self Care Is Not Expensive Or Time-Consuming

This is a great benefit because having three kids, a spouse, cooking, cleaning, friends, basically a life, I don’t want to feel like I am putting another task on my to-do list, or a damper on my budget.

What the media shows you as self care are these elaborate tasks that seem like you need to empty your wallet, and have hours of alone time before you can even get started.

Seeing things like that, make you not even want to get started, right? 

Well, good thing that stuff is false, and self care doesn’t have to cost you a dime or take much time. You see that I rhymed!

Self care can be as simple as recognizing that you are losing your shit and that you need to take a few deep breaths to calm down and figure out why.

Self care can be meditating each day for 10 minutes and getting comfortable with your thoughts.

Self care can be as simple as making sure you do something just for you so you feel like you matter too.

How To Develop A Self Care Plan That Works For You

Eliminate

Okay Ms. Superwoman, I need you to take the cape off. 

I need you to realize that you can have everything but you can’t have everything all at once. 

This means that if you are ready to make a difference and take care of yourself so you can stop being stressed so much, then you are probably going to have to let something take a back seat. 

Now, don’t freak out because this does not mean you aren’t going to be able to take care of what you need.

This does not mean that you can’t get anything done. 

This means that you need to prioritize. 

You have to schedule a date for you to practice self care, or you will continue to push it back. This means because you aren’t taking care of yourself, you will burn out. 

Discover Your Self Care Type

What a lot of people don’t know is that there are different types of self care

In fact, there are 9 that I focus on. 

They are:

  • Emotional
  • Psychological
  • Professional
  • Spiritual
  • Financial
  • Physical
  • Social
  • Environmental
  • Personal. 

I get it 9 different types of self care is a lot. 

But, to help you get started with developing a self care plan, you should take the self care quiz below so you can see which area you need to start with.

Activities that you enjoy and help you

So with the idea of self care being elaborate from the media, it may come as a shock to you that as you get to know yourself, you will find some activities that you like that will be different from what others enjoy. 

For example for me to practice self care, I like to be alone. I do this by going to my favorite place, the library. 

This is different from what my close friends like and what my family likes, and what I was taught to like. 

I was taught to like being the center of attention, shop, and have flashy things, but as I got to know myself more, I really enjoy comforts like reflecting on life, goals and practicing gratitude. 

When you notice that activities that are not of the norm start to feel welcoming to you and give you a sense of peace, embrace it. 

Do not reject them because of what society’s standards try to put on you. 

Stick To It

Okay, so developing a self care plan is going to help you if and only if, you stick to it. 

If you start one and then become inconsistent with it, you are going to notice the change in your emotions and mindset, for the worse. 

Whereas, if you continue to take care of yourself consistently, you continue to check in on yourself, and make sure that you are changing your habits so that you can be the best you possible, there is no limit to where you will go.

Assess Monthly

Because there are so many different self care types and self care activities, you can choose from, you are going to have to assess how you feel. 

You have to assess if that self care activity worked for you and helped you identify your triggers, helped you to move forward in life and allowed you to get to know yourself more.
